What Is a Good GRE Score for MS in the USA in 2025?

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is scored out of 340 — 170 for Quantitative Reasoning and 170 for Verbal Reasoning — plus AWA scored 0–6. The average GRE score is around 155 for Verbal and 153 for Quant. For Indian students targeting MS programs in the USA, here is what you need to know:

GRE Quant Score Importance for Indian CS/Engineering Students

For Computer Science and Engineering programs, the Quant score is far more important than Verbal. Most top CS programs expect Quant 165+ (90th percentile). A Quant of 167–170 puts you in the top 5–8% of all test takers globally, which is extremely competitive even for MIT and Stanford.

Do All Universities Require the GRE?

Many US universities made GRE optional during COVID and have kept it optional since. However, strong GRE scores still significantly help Indian applicants stand out, especially for merit scholarships. In Europe and the UK, GRE is generally not required — IELTS/TOEFL is sufficient.
