Canada is the most popular PR destination for Indian students who study abroad, and IELTS is the gateway. Both the Student Direct Stream (study permit) and the Express Entry PR system are directly affected by your IELTS score. Understanding the CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) conversion and how IELTS points translate to Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores can mean the difference between waiting years for an invitation or receiving one in months.
- Study Permit (SDS stream): IELTS 6.0 overall, no band below 6.0
- Express Entry PR: Minimum CLB 7 (IELTS 6.0 each band) to be eligible; CLB 9 (IELTS 7.5 each band) for maximum language points
IELTS to CLB Conversion Table
| CLB Level | L | R | W | S | CRS Points (1st language) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 10 | 8.5 | 8.0 | 7.5 | 7.5 | 136 (max) |
| CLB 9 | 8.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 136 (max) |
| CLB 8 | 7.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 128 |
| CLB 7 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 116 |
| CLB 6 | 5.5 | 5.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 | — |
CRS Points: Why CLB 9 Matters So Much
In the Express Entry system, language ability is worth up to 310 CRS points (first language + bonus points). CLB 9 in all four skills gives you 136 points for your first language. The jump from CLB 8 to CLB 9 — going from 6.5 to 7.0 in each IELTS band — adds 8 CRS points per skill, or 32 points total. In a pool where recent Federal Skilled Worker invitations have cut-off scores between 480–530, 32 points is enormous.
The strategic implication: If you score IELTS 6.5 in Writing but 7.0+ in the other three skills, your CRS score suffers significantly from that one weak skill. It is often worth retaking IELTS to bring Writing to 7.0 even if it takes another 6–8 weeks of preparation.
IELTS for the Student Direct Stream (SDS)
The Student Direct Stream is Canada's fast-track study permit process for students from India (and several other countries). SDS-eligible applications are typically processed in 20–30 days. Requirements include:
- IELTS (Academic or General Training) overall 6.0, with no band below 6.0
- GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) of CAD 10,000
- Acceptance from a DLI (Designated Learning Institution)
- Medical exam completed
Note: A score of 5.5 in any single band means you do NOT qualify for SDS — your application goes through regular processing (20–60+ days). A single 5.5 in Writing can add weeks to your permit timeline.
IELTS for Canadian Universities (Admission)
| University | Master's Minimum | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| University of Toronto, McGill | 6.5–7.0 | Graduate programs vary; check specific department |
| UBC, University of Waterloo | 6.5 | Some programs require 7.0 |
| McMaster, Queens, Western | 6.5 | Standard Ontario university requirement |
| University of Calgary, Alberta | 6.5 | Business and Law often 7.0 |
| Dalhousie, Carleton, Ottawa | 6.5 | Some accept 6.0 for STEM programs |
Strategic Score Planning: Study + PR in One Move
The smartest strategy for Indian students going to Canada: get your IELTS score to 7.0 in all four bands before leaving India. This single score:
- Qualifies you for most Canadian universities
- Gets you SDS processing (faster study permit)
- Gives you CLB 8 in all skills (128 CRS points)
- After graduation with Canadian work experience, CLB 8 + Canadian education + 1 year work experience puts your CRS score in the competitive range for Express Entry invitation
Target: IELTS 7.0 each band before departure. Then focus on improving to 7.5+ in Writing (the skill most Indian graduates underperform in) for CLB 9 level when you apply for PR.
