Australia has a clear and transparent English language requirement system. Unlike the UK, where requirements vary enormously by university and program, Australian universities cluster around 6.5 as the standard. This predictability makes planning straightforward — and knowing the specific minimums for each band prevents the common mistake of meeting the overall score but failing on a single low band.
- Student visa minimum: IELTS 5.5 in each band (lower bar)
- University admission standard: 6.5 overall, 6.0 each band
- Go8 programs (standard): 6.5–7.0, 6.0–6.5 each band
- PTE accepted: Yes — for both visa and admission
- Valid period: 3 years from test date for most universities

IELTS and the Subclass 500 Student Visa
The Australian student visa (subclass 500) requires you to meet English language requirements. The minimum is IELTS 5.5 in each of the four bands. However, since most universities require 6.0–6.5, the university requirement effectively governs for almost all Indian students.
A key practical point: OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) must be purchased before your visa is issued. You need your OSHC policy number in your visa application. This is separate from your IELTS score — but both must be in order before the visa can be processed.
PTE Academic: Why Many Indian Students Choose It for Australia
PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) is fully accepted by all Australian universities and by the Department of Home Affairs for the student visa. Indian students increasingly choose PTE over IELTS for Australia applications because:
- Results in 48–72 hours vs 13 days for paper-based IELTS
- Computer-marked — no human examiner variability in Speaking and Writing
- More test date flexibility — typically more slots available
- Integrated skills — some find the integrated format easier than IELTS's separated sections
PTE equivalent scores: IELTS 6.5 ≈ PTE 58; IELTS 7.0 ≈ PTE 65; IELTS 7.5 ≈ PTE 79.
IELTS and the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)
The Subclass 485 visa allows international graduates to stay in Australia after completing their degree. There is no separate IELTS requirement for the 485 — your student visa IELTS score is used. However, the 485 requires evidence that you completed your qualification in Australia in English. Your graduation transcript from your Australian university serves as this evidence.
IELTS for Australian PR: The Points-Based System
Australian Skilled Migration uses a points-based system. English language proficiency is worth up to 20 points. IELTS band scores correspond to points as follows:
- 10 points: Competent English — IELTS 6.0 in each band (equivalent to TOEFL iBT 64 in each component)
- 15 points: Proficient English — IELTS 7.0 in each band
- 20 points: Superior English — IELTS 8.0 in each band
For most Indian graduates competing in the Australian Skilled Migration pool, IELTS 7.0+ in each band (proficient English, 15 points) is the strategic target. Superior English (8.0 each band) adds only 5 more points and requires significantly more preparation — the marginal return drops steeply.
